What a coincidence!! That TV program which introduced Haiku in Croatia was again broadcasted yesterday.
When I watched it 3 month ago for the first time, I've not decided to visit Croatia.
But now that, I'm more impressed than before.
I'm surprised you are a friend of hers by a curious coincidence.
This program is a Japanese art director traveled around Croatia with her to meet people who are committed to Haiku, and composed Haiku with them.

The Japanese art director, Hana Kino, met a Haiku book, "Knot"in Sarajevo.
She realized how popular Haiku is with Former Yugoslavian people.
She'd like to meet Ms. Visnja McMaster, who composed a beautiful and thought-provoking Haiku. Such as;

we pick chestnuts

Ms. Kino visited her Haiku class. Ms. McMaster introduced a impressive
Haiku of a little girl whose grandmother was killed in the war. It impacted me, too.

This little girl expressed the scene that the hens were gathering to protect her killed grandmother from the bombing.
She says that Haiku is asked one regulation of syllabicating 5-7-5. So it can control the disturbed mind
and restore the order of mind.
Ms. Kino wanted to meet a lot of Haiku poets. Ms. McMaster drove her around Croatia.
In the suburb of Zagreb, they found the ruined building destroyed by bombing during the domestic war.
Ms. McMaster found a small flower and a tree growing up in the ruined building. There is a new life in it.
And she composed;

They met an old man who lived in a small village, Severin. He is Mr. Marinko Kovačević, a president of an elementary school. He is famous for his strained and sharpened taste. He had been struggled with the terrible memory of the job at 16 years old. He was working as a coal miner under inferior condition during Tito era. There were a lot of peril in the hole of the coal mine. The nightmare had been bothering him for long years. But he could put it off by meeting Haiku. And he has recovered his peace of mind, and decided to visit the coal mine in ruins in Labin again in 30 years. The entrance of mine was closed. He said Haiku is an act to cut a moment in different method of long poems. So it's possible to endure of the momentary pain. And he could recover the peace of mind after composing Haiku of the miner. He composed a Haiku changing his figure into a sparrow. And he could bury the nightmare with his Haiku.

Ms. McMaster and Ms. Kino reached Rijeka. At the fish market, Ms. Kino had Haiku thought by Ms. McMaster. There were a lot of the media of Haiku, such as color, smell, sound and local people. There are many vivid sales women in the market as well as Japan. And Ms. Kino composed;

And Ms. McMaster composed;

are gazing at the foreigner

 

Japanese is so uncommon around there that the local people are looking at the foreigner with a surprise.

The Haiku club was taking place at Trsat Castle. There are a lot people, men and women, the young, the old who love Haiku also in Rijeka. All of them were having fun to compose Haiku. About life, family, nature, love, etc.... One young girl composed;

Now that peace has come back. Also the young girl has the hope for peace. An old man composed about the relationship of his wife;

This expresses the warm relationship with his wife for long years. ( Almost haiku in here were composed in Croatian. I translated Japanese on TV into English. So the number of syllables may be different from the regulation.)
It is wonderful thing that while composing about the agony of life, some compose just having fun.
They visited Pag island. The Bula, which is strong and cold wind was blowing in winter. There are a lot of people and sheep under the strict condition. Ms. Kino composed;

They reached the last place, Zadar, where they met Mr. Bilosnić (Sorry, I don't know the right spelling). This old city was also destroyed during the domestic war in 1991. But now peace has come back. Haiku impacted him with its short and simple style. He took a liking in Haiku because it's similar to Ganga, which is a local poem with a melody. He was saved from the agony of the war by Haiku, too. He composed about the beautiful city.

At the end of the trip...

 

Three went to his villa in Iž island. There are a lot of various nature on the island. He was spending the anxious period of the war. He couldn't compose Haiku at all during the war. He stayed at Iž a few days after the war, and the tranquil of island made him compose Haiku. And his mind was saved...

He could realize where he is located in the universe, and the relationship with the nature by composing Haiku. He could feel 'nothing' when he was composing Haiku. And he could integrate with the circumstances, live with nature. It's the complete peace, he said. Ms. McMaster said that Haiku gives us the peace of mind. In other words, when people come back to the child who has an innocent mind, Haiku will be born.
Now, the trip is coming to an end. Two tried to make Haiku to close the trip. Ms. McMaster composed;

The wave is born constantly, and changing. People can experience the infinity by seeing the sea.
She composed about nature being struck with awe.
Ms. Kino knew a various people is committed to Haiku in a various way on this trip. An old man cures the scar of his mind which left in his childhood by making Haiku .The man is getting back peace of mind which lost during the war by composing Haiku.
And people who are just enjoying Haiku purely.... This is the power which Haiku has. And she composed;
At the sunset

and say good bye...'
